DIY

Want to try podcasting from home or the office? It does take a little technical know-how but, for a few hundred dollars, you can be off-and-running in no time! And, of course, if you get stuck along the way, you can always contact us with any questions you may have. Let’s get started!

PODCASTING BASICS
What you need to start your own podcast
(Amazon affiliate links within)

Benefits of Podcasting

  • A podcast should be a part of your overall marketing strategy
  • You can replicate your written material
  • It gives you the opportunity to go into greater detail than a brochure
  • Demonstrate passion by using your voice
  • The spoken voice is more powerful than the written word

Mechanics

  • What is your MAIN TOPIC? (i.e.: real estate)
  • Break it down into sub-topics (episodes)
    • For example: local area properties, luxury properties, affordable properties, housing trends, types of property available, client testimonials, FAQs for first-time buyers, how to know you’re getting a good price, property tours, listing of the week, etc.
  • Recording gear (phone, laptop, tablet, desktop computer)
    • Inexpensive*
    • Moderate**
    • Expensive***
  • Live vs. recorded
    • Streaming on social media
  • Digital recording software
    • Audacity (Free, Mac & PC)
    • GarageBand (Free, Mac)
  • Audio-only vs. video
  • Audio platforms include: Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Spotify, iHeart, Stitcher, TuneIn, etc.
    • Video platforms include: YouTube, Facebook, etc.

What other equipment might I need?

  • Microphone
    • Dynamic is preferred over condenser
  • Mixer or audio interface
    • Mixers give you more flexibility than interfaces
  • Headphones
    • You’ll want to hear and control the sound that is being recorded
  • Monitors (give your ears a rest)
    • Used for editing and post production
  • Room soundproofing

I’m finished recording! Now what?

  • Editing
    • Removing extraneous noises and vocal mistakes (um, uh, ya know…)
    • Mixing – music, intro/outro, etc
  • Adds interest, sets the mood
    • Post-production – equalizing, compression
  • Compression helps level the sound so a yell is equal to a whisper
  • Setting the audio to Apple standards
    • -16 LUFS (Loudness Unit Full Scale)
  • Hosting
    • Just like a website, a podcast needs to be hosted
    • Once hosted, obtain your RSS feed code
    • Submit RSS feed to audio platforms listed above

Wrap-up

  • DIY vs. going to a studio
  • You have some decisions to make
